Pacific Storms: Tropical Storm Lala Hurricane Lowell
First came Tropical Storm Lala, creating damage throughout the islands. Then came Hurricane Lowell, with torrential rain, violent ocean surges, and gusts upwards of 120 MPH!
Thanks to church members and friends who prepared the church for Lowell: removing the tarp on the patio, removing street signs and banners, securing windows, and moving everything indoors that could get blown away.
Fortunately, the damages from Hurricane Lowell were minimal, although the roof leaked and the sanctuary floor was flooded. The outside panel of a door blew down towards the street. Small trees, bushes, branches and debris covered the property. The parsonage fared well and someone volunteered to remove the fallen avocado tree and plant a new one.
Hurricane Recovery Fund
Many have asked what the needs are after the hurricane—both for the church and the community. Our deacons met on Sunday, September 13, and decided to set up a hurricane recovery fund. Money given to the fund will go toward:
- Paying for expenses at the church and parsonage caused by the hurricane and preparing for the next major storm.
- Purchasing grocery gift cards at a local supermarket to help individuals and families struggling to make ends meet because of the hurricane.
- Helping struggling families in other ways, depending on the needs and the donations to the fund.
Once the recovery is over, any leftover money in the special fund that is not used locally will go to the Hawaii Conference of the United Church of Christ “Hawaii Disaster Relief Fund.” There are many churches and communities throughout the island which are affected by disasters that also need assistance.
For those who would like to contribute the the fund, you can send a check to the church or make a donation online be clicking the button below. Please write “Hurricane Relief” on the Note section of your check or in the Comment box on our online giving page.

Commitment Sunday
“All Saints Day” November 1st
Each year in the fall we ask our members and friends to consider a financial commitment to the general fund for the following year. This is an important practice because it reminds us to count our blessings, challenges us give according to those blessings, and it also really helps our finance committee to create an annual budget based upon anticipated income.
Our theme for the year is “…so that you will be a blessing!” Just like God has blessed people in the Bible so that they would be a blessing to others, God blesses YOU…so that you will be a blessing!
I invite you to focus on your blessings and on gratitude during the month of October, and then make a commitment on November 1—All Saints Day!—according to how you feel led by God’s Spirit.
If you give regularly and we have your address, you will be mailed a commitment card by the end of October. Please prayerfully consider completing the card and bringing it to church with you on November 1st. (There will be extras at church in case you forget yours at home.) If you know ahead of time that you won’t be in church, please consider getting your commitment card to the church office ahead of time, so that we can bless all of our commitments during our worship service.

Prayers and Squares
Prayers and Squares – Tuesday, November 3rd, 2026 10:00 A.M. – 1:00 P.M.
Prayers & Squares continues to meet in Moore Hall from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the first Tuesday of every month, where we spend most of our time promoting prayer by creating hand-tied quilts. Volunteers with all ranges of quilting experience may join for prayer, fellowship, stitching, and learning about quilting. The motto: “It’s not about the quilt; it’s all about the prayers.”
If you or someone in your ohana are in need of a tangible representation of prayer, please contact Debbie Gunning to request a quilt.
Prayer quilts are more than blankets. They are the visible, tangible, physical evidence of faith: faith in God, faith in love, faith in prayer.
Once a request for a quilt is received, the quilt is blessed with a prayer as a knot is tied by Kahu Alan; additional prayers knots are tied by the congregation. The finished quilt is then presented to the person needing our prayers.
Lectionary Readings
Wednesday, November 11th
No Lectio Divina in September! 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. At the Smith Memorial Parsonage Lectio Divina is a time to silently reflect together on a repeated reading from the Bible and then share with one another about the experience (if so desired). Lectio Divina typically meets on the second Wednesday of the month. Please let either Kahu or Karen Johnson know whenever you plan to attend.
